Task 2.1: Blue Velvet Analysis

Blue Velvet Opening Scene:  The scene opens up with blue curtains fading into a clear blue sky, showing a peaceful atmosphere. The camera then scrolls down to a traditional American white picket fence and some roses. All three colors of the American flag are captured from a low angle shot; this sets the location of the scene.

The music in the background helps continue with the idea of a peaceful place, but maybe too peaceful. Slow, clean transitions allow the smooth swap between scenes. From the fence it then draws focus towards a bright red, classic firetruck. It seems to be in no hurry with a man waving while alongside his dog. The three colors of the American flag are also shown in this scene. However, this time it might be a sign to be taken as incoming danger. Going even further to set the atmosphere, a long shot of kids peacefully crossing the street is included. After this brief introduction it presents us to a specific house where it implies whatever is going on will happen in that specific house. The wife inside watching TV while the husband is outside watering the grass is considered to be "relaxing" or a "care-free" lifestyle, this is shown to take away the viewer's mind from any possible negative event. The furious noise of the hose about to explode then rumbles over the atmosphere-suiting music and leads the viewer's attention to the occurrence of a tragic event about to take place. The man then falls to the ground, leaving us no clue as to what may have gone wrong in such a peaceful moment. Around him are only a dog and a child, both unaware of what is going on. This portrays the innocence of the two but may also frustrate the viewer as there is nothing they could possibly do about the tragedy. The camera then shifts to the perspective of a mysterious, much smaller creature. It shows us the garden from its point of view and takes the focus away from the man that just tumbled to the ground, foreshadowing the reason behind what happened.
